Product News: Behringer IAXE393 USB Guitar

September 26th, 2007 by jonny

Awesome, simply install the software provided on to your mac or PC, plug in the behringer iaxe393 USB guitar and start making music or simply jam away with your favourite tunes.

For less than £100 you get a solid guitar with loads of virtual amps and stomp boxes powered by state-of-the-art modeling software that’s included. Ideal for someone wanting to get into home recording whilst sticking to a tight budget.

I’d like to see more brands doing this as its definitely a way forward, and at such a low price this product is in reach of most budgets.

Setting up Your Guitars Intonation

September 24th, 2007 by Tim

Ever tuned your guitar to perfection, played your melodic heart-felt solo to the best of your ability but for some reason it sounds out of tune and absolutely pap?

There are two possible reasons for this; either your guitar’s intonation is out or you’re rubbish at playing the guitar. If you suspect it’s the latter reason then, as they say in Newport ‘go home son your mum’s got cake’.

Alternately if it is your intonation, here are a few tips on how to sort it:

Firstly fit your guitar with new strings and tune the offending string with a decent quality tuner, then play the string on the 12th fret and see what the tuner says.

If the string is in tune played openly but sharp when played on the 12th fret, the saddle needs moving away from the neck effectively lengthening the string (usually done by turning saddle adjustment screw clockwise).

intonation

If the string is in tune played openly but flat when played on the 12th fret, the saddle needs moving towards the neck effectively shortening the string (usually done by turning the saddle adjustment screw anti clockwise)

Once you’ve got the strings to play in tune openly and on the 12th fret, you’re there!

Setting up Your Guitars Truss Rod

September 21st, 2007 by Tim

Truss rod adjustment is often avoided by guitarists, but it needn’t be. The fact of the matter is, as long as you approach it with patience and a delicate touch you canyou’re your guitar’s neck set perfectly for your style of playing. Below the ‘ideal’ height is stated as less than one millimetre but not touching the fret. However, some guitarists (especially those braining the living hendrix out of their guitars) prefer it slightly higher to allow the strings to vibrate wildly without choking on the frets. This is entirely down to personal preference, the best advice would be to give it a go, have a play. If it feels good keep it that way. If not have another go.

Firstly you need to check your guitar neck to see if it has an upward-bow or a backward bow. This is easily done, with a little special move.

topneckPlace the guitar on your lap as though you’re about to play it, then place the thumb of your right hand on the highest lowerneckfret on the low E-string(see right) and place the index finger of your left hand on the first fret on the bottom E-string(see left). then check how high the string is off the 12th fret.

Now the correct height that the E-string should be away from the 12th fret when you have the top and bottom fret pressed is debatable. The general consensus with guitarists that I’ve spoken to is ‘as close as you can without it actually touching’.

If the string is touching the 12th fret there is too much back-bow and your truss rod is too tight. In order to remedy this take the appropriate allen key and turn it (at most) one quarter turn anticlockwise and then re-check the height until the string is less than a millimetre away from the fret, but not touching .

Bear in mind that the neck is made of wood and may take a few moments to re-settle. remember that patience it the key, don’t be tempted to do more than very small adjustments at a time.

Similarly, if you check the distance on the 12th fret when the top and bottom frets are depressed and it is more than a millimetre away from the fret board, the neck will have a forward-bow and the truss rod can be tightened.

This time turn the allen key (at most) one quarter turn clockwise and re-check the height. Repeat this until the string (when the top and bottom frets are pressed) is less than a millimetre away from the 12th fret and you’re there!

Ringo Starr to be inducted into Hall of Fame

September 17th, 2007 by Benny

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr (real name Richard Starkey) is to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

All the other Beatles have already been honoured with the title, both as individuals and also as a collective, but insiders now reveal that Ringo is to be inducted in the New Year.

Ringo enjoyed significant success in the 70’s with his solo efforts - at one point out selling Paul, John & George and having 7 consecutive chart hits.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a museum in Cleveland. Artists who have had a major influence on the music industry are celebrated here.

Since 1986, a small selection of artists have been inducted into the Hall of Fame in an annual ceremony held in New York.

Inductees include Elvis Presley, U2, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, The Police & Eric Clapton.

Brian May Tribute to Pavarotti

September 12th, 2007 by PlayRecord.Net Management

Queen guitarist Brian May has paid tribute to Pavarotti who he shared the stage with at the 10th anniversary Pavarotti and Friends charity concert in 2003 in Pavarotti’s hometown of Modena, Italy. Pavarotti, 71, died on September 6th after finally losing a long battle with cancer.

“I resisted talking about my moment of singing with Luciano when I wrote my small tribute… because I didn’t want to use the occasion to do any self-advertisement. All I wanted to do was offer respects and love.” Wrote Brian on his official web site

“I see that the video of ‘Too Much Love’ [from the Pavarotti and Friends concert] has been hugely watched, yesterday and today … and that makes me feel… all the strange things that go with sadness and loss. Mixed in, there are feelings of pride and joy that this moment should have happened. Strongest of all, perhaps, is that feeling, when someone passes on, of incomprehension, and disbelief. Why? What are we meant to be learning? Why are we still here? Maybe it’s all a dream. Well, Luciano Pavarotti spun dreams for the world. A great man. A great loss. But his heavenly voice will be with us for a very long time.”

Brian had previously performed “Too Much Love Will Kill You” for Pavarotti in the very first Pavarotti and Friends concert held in 1992. Having returned to perform again just over ten years later, Pavarotti specially requested to perform the song as a duet with Brian.

Choosing an Acoustic Guitar

September 10th, 2007 by PlayRecord.Net Management

There are a few things you should think about when you are looking to buy an acoustic guitar. The easiest way to go about it is to decide roughly what kind of budget you are looking to spend and work it from there. You can always change your mind later on, but if you don’t at least narrow down the huge choice of acoustic guitars a bit - you might find yourself overwhelmed with choice.

Tanglewood TW1000The next thing you need to think about is whether you are going to get a plain acoustic or an electro acoustic guitar. An electro acoustic guitar is simply an acoustic guitar with the addition of some built in electronics including a pre amp and some kind of pick up or microphone. If you are going to use the guitar to play live, or for recording purposes, an electro acoustic guitar is usually the better option. If however you are simply going to play it acoustically at home, then it is usually better to go for a plain acoustic guitar. The reason is that those electronics do cost extra, so for the same budget you are not getting quite as good a guitar as you would if you went for a plain acoustic guitar. Then again, bear in mind that it is tricky and expensive to add electronics to an acoustic guitar later on, so if you ever are going to want electronics then you should probably get an electro acoustic guitar now.

As you browse through the selection of acoustic guitars, you will notice that there are a few different shapes. The most common acoustic guitar shape is the dreadnought. The dreadnought shape is fairly big which gives it a good amount of volume and a nice big tone. However smaller players often find dreadnoughts to be a bit on the big side and would prefer to go for something a bit smaller. For these players we recommend a smaller bodied design such as grand auditorium, folk or parlour sized guitar. If size isn’t an issue and you want the maximum sonic capability then you need a jumbo or even super jumbo. These oversize bodies give huge volume and tone. PlayRecord.Net supplies cases for all kinds of acoustic guitar, however the most usual dreadnought shape is definitely the option with the most guitar cases and bags to choose from, so bear that in mind as well.

The final thing to think about is which acoustic guitar brand to go for. Our favourite acoustic guitar brand in the £100 - £700 bracket has to be Tanglewood Guitars.Tanglewood TW45 PlayRecord.Net is a Tanglewood Guitars Super Centre, which means that we are able to offer the best in terms of range, price and service for this highly popular and award winning acoustic guitar brand. If you are thinking of an electro acoustic, and you can handle the idea of a roundback, then we highly recommend going for Ovation guitars. If you do not fancy an Ovation roundback guitar - then again we would highly recommend going for a Tanglewood electro acoustic guitar.
