Tanglewood EE15

May 13th, 2008 by Tim

ee1.jpgAaaaaaw, isn’t it cute! If Slash were a Hobbit, he’d play one of these!

The Tanglewood EE15 is a mini Les Paul and it really is diddy The guitar is wonderfully scaled down, the only thing remaining normal size is the hardware. The 21st fret is ban on 34cm (just under 13.5 inches) from the nut and is clearly aimed at three types of guitarist; kids, travelling guitarists with small luggage space and performers who want to make the audience laugh.

This mini rocker sports 6 die cast machine heads which are very smoothly geared and don’t seam to slip out of tune. The neck has a slightly squashed D profile and is well suited to small and large hands alike. The fretboard is made of a fine piece of rosewood with 21 quite fat frets. Body wields one humbucker, tone, volume and the mandatory tuneomatic style bridge. The body is made of good solid wood that is shown off well through the translucent cherryburst finish.
ee2.jpg
When plugging this guitar in I did what I deamed to be most appropriate, slapped up the over drive and lauched into Master of Puppets. I then nearly fell off my seat laughing at how good it sounded. It’s supprisingly hard to tell that this is such a small guitar when it’s plugged in, the single humbucker certainly delivers a punch.

The supprising thing about this guitar is that it has a considerable amount of tone. The solid body delivers a good deal of warmth that would be quite acceptable for a full size guitar. The only down side to this size is that the intonation is quite sensitive and needed a little tweak out of the box. Though this is of little consequence for the very young player.

To sum up, this little thing is certainly worth its weight in gold and certainly packs a heavy punch than its size would suggest.

Product Review: Encore E99 Electric Guitar ‘Blaster’ Pack

April 17th, 2008 by jonny

There’s lots of guitar packages on the market, so there’s plenty of choice for the beginner. The Encore Blaster pack is currently one of the most affordable kits out there, and also one of the best value.encore5.jpg

Available for only £149.99 down from £196, this pack is available in cherry sunburst, black or left handed black variations. Included in the pack is the Encore E99, B.B blaster amplifier, tuner, carry bag, stand, lead, strap, spare set of strings and a plectrum. Also included is an instructional DVD and a Tutor listing to get your rock star career started.

So, out of the box you can expect the guitar to be out of tune, nothing untoward there. The paintwork is great for a guitar in its price range and the overall build quality is rather pleasing. As with most guitars a quick set-up would not go a miss, though probably not immediately necessary.

encore1.jpg The remaining items in the pack are the amp and the smaller accessories that sort of speak for themselves. The amplifier is basic and suitable for practice only. At 10 watts the B.B blaster amp will not offend your elderly neighbours, and if it turns out that they have super-sensitive spy-sattalite style hearing, then there’s a jack plug for your headphones to stick into (head phones not provided). Other features on the amp include an overdrive switch marked as “zap”, you also get “beef” (bass) “tweak” (treble) and most importantly “enjoy” (volume).

Other accessories include the carry bag, strings, stand and lead. The stand and carry bag are both Kinsman brand. Kinsman are a well reputed brand and whilst the bag provided does not have the padding you may want it is certainly durable.

Overall, this is a splendid pack that is reliable, affordable and has a good standard of build quality. The pack is bundled with all the extra’s you need to keep you going for a good while. A great package for anyone interested in starting out the guitar.

Stagg S300BK

April 7th, 2008 by Tim

00001.jpgFor many years now the Stagg S300 has been the staple diet of the beginners guitar market and for as little as £64.99 you can see why.

Having played the guitar for quite some time and given it a thorough checking over there is actually nothing to complain about considering the entire guitar is cheaper than a Seymour Duncan pickup.

First impressions on plugging in are, it’s a very Stratty tone, very sharp high ends, just not as rounded as an actual strat. The neck pickup setting delivers an organic hollow sound with a smooth low end, the middle delivers an almost acoustic tone and the neck gives us a piercing high end not for the faint hearted. The combination settings of neck and middle pickup and bridge and middle pickup give exactly what you’d expect from a Strat, that very sweet sounding Jazzy twang.

Starting at the top, the headstock is recognisably Stratish with sharp curves instead of rounded. The machineheads are sealed with a smooth action and do a good job of staying in tune.00005.jpg

00008.jpgThe fret board is one of the best features of this guitar, the frets are seated well, edges well finished and the fret wire itself is highly polished and makes for very smooth playing on a neck with a nicely rounded D shape.

The solid alder body has a good weight and provides a good amount of tone, with a wide sweep of choice available from the tone controls and the tremolo bridge provides all the dive bombing opportunities you need with a highly polished and tidy finish.

For £64.99 this guitar certainly ticks all the boxes.

Stone Temple Pilots Reunion!

February 19th, 2008 by Sean

It appears that a Stone Temple Pilots reunion this year is not just rumor, but it’s almost certain. On January 20th of 2008, lead vocalist Scott Weiland told the Miami Herald at a charity event in Miami that Stone Temple Pilots fans “should be on the lookout for a STP reunion in the coming months.”

The rumor of a STP reunion had been circulating for some time since reported problems in Velvet Revolver rose up again, which also coincided with Scott Weiland reconciling with Robert and Dean Deleo, who were also the main songwriters with Stone Temple Pilots. Stone Temple Pilots broke through in 1992 with the release of their debut album ‘Core’ which has since gone 8 times Platinum on the strength of the singlePlush.’ Stone Temple Pilots released their last full length studio album ‘Shangri-La Dee Da’ in 2001 and the fans have been wondering if Scott and the Deleo brothers could ever reform.

While Weiland formed Velvet Revolver with former members of Guns N Roses and the Deleo brothers went on to release an album under the name Army of Anyone, it seems STP fans can finally get excited about the certain. We caught up with Robert Deleo recently at an Army of Anyone show to find out how he feels about Stone Temple Pilots long list of accomplishments and if there were any hard feelings between him and Weiland.

Deleo Proud Of Stone Temple Pilots Accomplishments

“You know, I haven’t seen Scott in awhile. I wish him the best and there’s no hard feelings at all. We just kind of moved on and I’m very proud of what we did.”

In 2006 Scott Weiland was questioned if he could see a Stone Temple Pilots reunion in the future and he stated “the only thing that’s left unfinished is the completion of the story. If all the planets lined up, you never know what might happen one day,” implying that the end of the bands story had yet to be written. Recently, current Velvet Revolver and former Guns N Roses guitarist Slash, who is currently working on a solo album, mentioned a Guns N Roses and Stone Temple Pilots reunion tour wouldn’t be impossible to happen. Although anything that would involve Axl Rose certainly wouldn’t be easy to make possible. Look for Stone Temple Pilots to confirm their plans for in the coming months.

Greatest Guitarists Series: Jimmy Page

February 13th, 2008 by PlayRecord.Net Management

Jimmy Page, OBE was born on the 9th of January 1944. His career started off as a session guitarist in London. This then lead on to him becoming a member of The Yardbirds, from late 1966 to 1968, before founding the English rock band Led Zeppelin.

Before getting into his own bands, Jimmy did loads of session work. He was talent scouted by John Gibb of EMI records who wanted him to work on a number of singles for them. He was then offered a position with Decca records which gave him even more session work. Jimmy became a full time session guitarist and his work included Marianne Faithfull’s “As Tears Go By”, The Nashville Teens’ “Tobacco Road”, The Rolling Stones’ “Heart of Stone” (alternate version), Van Morrison & Them’s “Baby Please Don’t Go” and “Here Comes the Night”, Dave Berry’s “The Crying Game” and “My Baby Left Me”, and Brenda Lee’s “Is It True”.

In 1968 Page joined Led Zeppellin along with Robert Plant (vocals), John Paul Jones (bass guitar / keyboards) and John Bonham (drums). The groups roots can be traced to the Yardbirds which Page previously played bass guitar and then second lead guitar along with Jeff Beck. With their first album not yet released, Led Zeppelin made their live debut at the University of Surrey, Guildford on October 15, 1968.

The self titled debut album was released in 1969. It is often described as one of the first heavy metal albums, however Robert Plant has said that this is not really fair as a large amount of the album is acoustic.

Jimmy Page’s guitar style continues to be a major influence of modern music. His solo in the massively famousStairway to Heaven” has been voted by readers of various guitar magazines, including Guitar World and Total Guitar, as the greatest guitar solo of all time.

The Offspring Confirmed For Download

February 8th, 2008 by Sean

According to sources, the legendary punk band The Offspring will headline this year’s Download festival, set to take place on the weekend of June 13-15. The festival will also be headlined by The Lostprophets and one other to be comfirmed legendary rock band (strongly rumored to be Kiss). Other bands confirmed for this year’s festival are metal legends Judas Priest and Finnish love metal band HIM.

The Offspring are currently in the studio working on the new.

The band has been working on the album for over a year with producer Bob Rock (of Metallica fame), and while frontman Dexter Holland had been posting studio updates on their official website, it is unknown how far the recording has progressed and what its title will be.

The new album will likely include the tracksFix You”, “Hammerhead” “Stuff’s Messed Up” and “Takes Me Nowhere”. Holland describes them “lots of guitar, energy, lots of energy, and good songs”.

Drummer Atom Willard left The Offspring to focus on Angels & Airwaves and was replaced by Pete Parada (Saves The Day, Alkaline Trio, Face To Face) during last summer. He made his live debut with the band at Japan’s Summer Sonic festival in August. Josh Freese (The Vandals, A Perfect Circle) had been laying down drum tracks in the studio for the forthcoming album, which the band worked on in Maui, Hawaii with Rock and in their hometown of Huntington Beach, California.

The Offspring has sold more than 32 million copies of their seven albums prior to the 2005 release of “Greatest Hits”, which included “Come Out And Play (Keep ‘Em Separated),” “Self Esteem,” “Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)” and “Why Don’t You Get A Job?”.

Prior to the Download festival, The Offspring will be part of the Soundwave Festival that will hit five Australian cities later this month.
