Choosing an Acoustic Guitar
September 10th, 2007 by PlayRecord.Net ManagementThere are a few things you should think about when you are looking to buy an acoustic guitar. The easiest way to go about it is to decide roughly what kind of budget you are looking to spend and work it from there. You can always change your mind later on, but if you don’t at least narrow down the huge choice of acoustic guitars a bit - you might find yourself overwhelmed with choice.
The next thing you need to think about is whether you are going to get a plain acoustic or an electro acoustic guitar. An electro acoustic guitar is simply an acoustic guitar with the addition of some built in electronics including a pre amp and some kind of pick up or microphone. If you are going to use the guitar to play live, or for recording purposes, an electro acoustic guitar is usually the better option. If however you are simply going to play it acoustically at home, then it is usually better to go for a plain acoustic guitar. The reason is that those electronics do cost extra, so for the same budget you are not getting quite as good a guitar as you would if you went for a plain acoustic guitar. Then again, bear in mind that it is tricky and expensive to add electronics to an acoustic guitar later on, so if you ever are going to want electronics then you should probably get an electro acoustic guitar now.
As you browse through the selection of acoustic guitars, you will notice that there are a few different shapes. The most common acoustic guitar shape is the dreadnought. The dreadnought shape is fairly big which gives it a good amount of volume and a nice big tone. However smaller players often find dreadnoughts to be a bit on the big side and would prefer to go for something a bit smaller. For these players we recommend a smaller bodied design such as grand auditorium, folk or parlour sized guitar. If size isn’t an issue and you want the maximum sonic capability then you need a jumbo or even super jumbo. These oversize bodies give huge volume and tone. PlayRecord.Net supplies cases for all kinds of acoustic guitar, however the most usual dreadnought shape is definitely the option with the most guitar cases and bags to choose from, so bear that in mind as well.
The final thing to think about is which acoustic guitar brand to go for. Our favourite acoustic guitar brand in the £100 - £700 bracket has to be Tanglewood Guitars.
PlayRecord.Net is a Tanglewood Guitars Super Centre, which means that we are able to offer the best in terms of range, price and service for this highly popular and award winning acoustic guitar brand. If you are thinking of an electro acoustic, and you can handle the idea of a roundback, then we highly recommend going for Ovation guitars. If you do not fancy an Ovation roundback guitar - then again we would highly recommend going for a Tanglewood electro acoustic guitar.
